Cleveland, OH – During its 100th season, The Cleveland Orchestra returns for the 12th year of concerts and education and community programming in Miami. Concerts will take place in January and February led by Music Director Franz Welser-Möst featuring symphonies by Beethoven and Mahler at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County’s John S. and James L. Knight Concert Hall. The Adrienne Arsht Center has been the presenting partner of the Orchestra’s Miami concerts since the annual residency began in 2007. Praise of The Cleveland Orchestra under the artistic leadership of Welser-Möst includes The New York Times calling the ensemble “… American’s most brilliant orchestra,” and The Wall Street Journal stating that the Orchestra is “… magnificent.”

Concerts at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County
On January 26 and 27 Franz Welser-Möst conducts Mahler’s Ninth Symphony, the composer’s breathtaking, last completed symphony, which is considered to be a meditation on the beauty of life.
On February 2 and 3 the Orchestra’s all-Beethoven program explores the composer’s iconic Symphony No. 5, his joyful Symphony No. 8, and the tragic and dramatic Overture to Coriolan.
Both concerts are a special showcase of Cleveland Orchestra musicians during the Orchestra’s Centennial season. Franz Welser-Möst chose these “seismic works” by Mahler and Beethoven for the 100th season because of their great impact on the music world — they changed history.
Prelude Concerts
Prelude Concerts with members of The Cleveland Orchestra performing in chamber ensembles will take place one hour prior to the start of the concerts on January 26 and 27 (featuring works by Schubert and Bernard Rands), and February 3 (featuring works by Beethoven and Adrien François.) Education Concerts
For the 12th year, on February 1, the Orchestra will co-present two education performances with the Arsht Center for students in the Miami-Dade County Public School District at Knight Concert Hall. Led by Cleveland Orchestra Assistant Conductor Vinay Parameswaran, the dynamic and engaging performances introduce students to classical music and the instruments of the orchestra. This year’s program is focused on the legacy and teachings of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and features works by Beethoven, Copland, Mendelssohn and Dvorak alongside Duke Ellington’s Vortex from The River and the traditional spiritual “We Shall Overcome.”
“Civil Rights: Remembering MLK Jr.” uses music and dramatic vignettes (in between orchestra pieces), to trace the life journey of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. through major events of the Civil Rights Movement — celebrating his victories, emphasizing his philosophy of non-violence, reflecting on his untimely death, and asking what we can do now to honor and fulfill his legacy. The music is symbolic of peaceful revolution from the life of Dr. King and other periods of history, demonstrating the timeless nature of the need for social justice and unity. This concert is presented in collaboration with Karamu House — the oldest African American theater in the United States —located in Cleveland, Ohio.
Additional Education Events in the Miami Community
January 28: Cleveland Orchestra musicians will return to the University of Miami’s Frost School of Music as part of an ongoing partnership for a New Music Reading session of works in development by composition students.
January 31 and February 2: Four Music Explorer programs will be presented by Cleveland Orchestra musicians for Miami Dade County Public School (MDCPS) students. Music Explorer programs introduce young people to the instruments of the orchestra — one at a time. Each half-hour program will have children singing, clapping, and moving to the music while Cleveland Orchestra musicians perform short solo selections and familiar tunes, and demonstrate their instruments.
February 1: Cleveland Orchestra musicians return to Coconut Grove Cares/The Barnyard as part of their after school music program.
February 2: Cleveland Orchestra musicians will return to MDCPS’s Coral Reef High School for an orchestra repertoire coaching session.

Under 18s Free
“Under 18s Free” continues for Cleveland Orchestra concerts in Miami on January 26 and 27, and February 2 and 3. The Orchestra’s signature and innovative program continues to develop young audiences by making attending Orchestra concerts affordable for families, offering free tickets to young people, 17 and under, with the purchase of an adult ticket.
