Cleveland, OH – The Cleveland Orchestra has announced details of the 14th year of its Miami residency, which includes concerts as well as education and community programming. Concerts will take place across two weeks in January 2020, featuring Music Director Franz Welser-Möst leading Sergei Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet – Act III & IV, Prokofiev’s Symphony No. 2, and Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 5. Details of these programs are included below. All concerts take place at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County’s John S. and James L. Knight Concert Hall. The Adrienne Arsht Center has been the presenting partner of the Orchestra’s Miami concerts since the annual residency began in 2007.

Concerts at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County
On January 17 and 18, Franz Welser-Möst conducts two works by Sergei Prokofiev, the Symphony No. 2 and Romeo and Juliet – Act III & IV. Prokofiev’s sumptuous ballet music for Romeo and Juliet beautifully underscores the tenderness of young love amidst violent tragedy like no other representation of William Shakespeare’s classic play. Prokofiev’s rarely performed Symphony No. 2 is, in the composer’s words, a “symphony of iron and steel," which reflects the menacing style of the work.
January 24 and 25, Franz Welser-Möst conducts Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 5. Mahler himself called his Fifth Symphony a “foaming, roaring, raging sea of sound.” It begins simply, with a lone trumpet fanfare and quickly explodes into a passionate, thrilling musical soundscape. The Adagietto is known as the single most famous piece by Mahler — Leonard Bernstein played it at John F. Kennedy Jr.’s funeral, and it is liberally used in the soundtrack of the classic Italian/French dramatic film Death in Venice.
Prelude Concerts
Prelude Concerts with members of The Cleveland Orchestra performing in chamber ensembles will take place one hour prior to the start of the concerts on January 17, 18, 24, and 25. These performances are free of charge to audience members attending each evening’s concert. Details of the repertoire and musicians performing will be announced later in 2019.
Education Concerts and Activities
For the 14th year, the Orchestra will co-present education performances with the Arsht Center for students in the Miami-Dade County Public School District (MDCPSD) at Knight Concert Hall. These dynamic and engaging concerts introduce students to live, orchestral music – a first-time experience for most. Orchestra musicians will also present “Music Explorers” programs to very young students in Miami-area schools, introducing them to the instruments of the Orchestra one at a time; participate in coachings with high school students at MDCPSD’s Coral Reef High School; visit the after-school program at Coconut Grove Care’s Barnyard; and more. Additional details will be announced later in 2019.
Under 18s Free
“Under 18s Free” continues for Cleveland Orchestra concerts in Miami on January 17 and 18, and January 24 and 25. The Orchestra’s signature and innovative program developed in Northeast Ohio and extended to Miami in 2013. “Under 18s Free” continues to develop young audiences by making attending Orchestra concerts affordable for families, offering free tickets to young people aged 17 and under, with the purchase of a regular adult ticket.
