December 14, 2022 The Cleveland Orchestra to host annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration Concert on January 15

The Cleveland Orchestra will host its free, annual concert in honor of the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in the Jack, Joseph, and Morton Mandel Concert Hall at Severance Music Center on Sunday, January 15, 2023, at 7:00 p.m. The performance will be led by The Cleveland Orchestra’s assistant conductor Daniel Reith and feature the Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration Chorus, an all-volunteer community chorus directed by Dr. William Henry Caldwell.

André Gremillet, President and CEO The Cleveland Orchestra and Music Director Franz Welser-Möst, today announced the historic gift to the Orchestra of the autograph manuscript of Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 2, “Resurrection,” generously donated by one of its Trustees, the noted Austrian media executive and philanthropist Herbert G. Kloiber.

The Cleveland Orchestra announced on Tuesday two solo piano recitals to be added to the 2022-23 Severance Music Center classical season: Vìkingur Ólafsson (November 30) and Maria João Pires (May 3). Previously announced, Mitsuko Uchida’s all-Beethoven solo piano recital on February 26 is also part of the Orchestra’s 2022-23 season piano recital series.

Today, The Cleveland Orchestra announced that after an extensive and rigorous audition and search process, Music Director Franz Welser-Möst and The Cleveland Orchestra have appointed violinist David Radzynski as concertmaster. He will hold the Blossom-Lee Concertmaster Chair, which was endowed by Mrs. John A. Lee in 1975 in honor of her parents Mr. and Mrs. Dudley Blossom, Sr. Mr. Radzynski’s start date is in the process of being determined.

In August and September 2022, The Cleveland Orchestra and Music Director Franz Welser-Möst embark on their 20th international tour together, with 12 performances in nine European cities: Amsterdam, Berlin, Cologne, Dresden, Hamburg, Linz, Lucerne, Prague, and Vienna. Over the course of three weeks from August 31 to September 16, the tour’s concert programs will feature the music of Berg, Bruckner, Rihm, Schubert, Strauss, as well as Mozart with pianist Igor Levit.

The Cleveland Orchestra returns to The Sunshine State for performances in Miami. Marking its 16th year in Florida, the Orchestra performs works by Ravel, Varèse, and Debussy in November 2022, plus Tchaikovsky, Schubert, Respighi, and Deutsch in January 2023. Music Director Franz Welser-Möst leads the January performances and is joined by guest violinist Lisa Batiashvili for Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto, while Michael Tilson Thomas conducts the November concerts and is joined by guest pianist George Li for Debussy’s Fantaisie for Piano and Orchestra.

The Strauss album features three of Richard Strauss's early tone poems (Macbeth, Don Juan, and Till Eulenspiegel’s Merry Pranks), providing a tantalizing window into Welser-Möst's reputation as a renowned conductor of Strauss’s music. The George Walker album offers an exploration of the composer’s Pulitzer Prize–winning Lilacs for voice and orchestra with soprano Latonia Moore, as well as Antifonys for string orchestra, and Sinfonias No. 4 and No. 5.

Today, The Cleveland Orchestra announced details of the second season of In Focus, its digital streaming concert series on adella.live and the Adella digital streaming app. Following its successful launch in 2020 and series of fifteen episodes in Season 1, the second season of In Focus, running from February to June, includes a total of six new episodes.

The Cleveland Orchestra regrets to announce the cancellation of its 2022 Miami residency in partnership with the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County. The decision has been made for the safety of the Orchestra and traveling staff due to the steady increase of Covid-19 cases and high transmission rating from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
